Hiking News:

Sorel Tofino II - How well do they perform in the cold?

My normal "winter" boot is just a Keen waterproof hiking boot with lightweight wool socks (the kind you can wear hiking in the summer or winter). Over the past 3 or so years using them, I have had probably less than 5 instances that I can remember having cold feet while out snow-shoeing or doing other winter activities. That said, I have a chance for a pair of Sorel Tofinos II's at a pretty good discount. However, some reviews have left me skeptical of their warmth rating. Conside...

Patagonia down jacket lost its fluff

I used a washing kit to clean my jacket and I dried it with the little plastic static balls that come with the kit. It worked great except for I noticed on my bike commute into work this morning that one of the sleeves had lost its fluff. I was thinking about throwing it back in the dryer on a low temp with the static balls when I got home to see if it could re-fluff itself but I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas for things to try before I did that. Any ideas submitted by ...

Winter jacket for walking commute

I'm looking for a winter jacket that will keep me warm as I walk to school on a daily basis in Southern Ontario. I was thinking of getting some kind of pullover fleece to layer with a hard shell jacket. Would this keep me warm compared to something like an insulated jacket I'm having a hard time finding comparisons between the two. submitted by /u/PurpleGatsby [link] [comments]...

Adding a second specific sleeping bag to my sleeping bag.

Hi everyone, I've got a duck-feather stuffed sleeping bag, which I like for the price I paid it. It says it goes down to 7'C during extreme condition. Last week-end I went camping and outside it was as low as 2 or 3'C. So I had to put every clothes I had, including a full merino pant and long-sleeve t-shirt, a jogging, a ski t-shirt, a fleece, technic socks and my stuffed coat (not really hot). It was hardly enough. I don't want to buy a second sleeping bag. Instead, I ...

Black Diamond Jackets

Hi everybody, So I'm new here but I was looking on advice for purchasing a jacket for the winter. I am from Nebraska so it gets pretty cold in the winters and I am also looking to use this jacket mostly for day to day wear but with the potential for skiing and hiking as well. I have some layers to work with under, but I am looking for something that would work as an exterior layer mostly. I am not super concerned with having a waterproof jacket but something that can handle some adverse weat...
